Sul not Sulis

[edit]

It seems to me that the alternative form Sul should be acknowledged here. If, as is commonly believed, the name is cognate with Old Irish súil ("eye, sight") then it seems likely that the Brittonic name was also Sul, not Sulis. And certainly 19th century discussion of the deity uses "Sul" rather than "Sulis" : https://www.google.co.uk/books/edition/Journal_of_the_British_Archaeological_As/ECoUAAAAYAAJ?hl=en&gbpv=1&dq=%22sul%22+minerva%22&pg=PA268&printsec=frontcover. And Sul is the common rendering on various non-specialist but nevertheless mainstream websites, eg bath.co.uk If there has been scholarship that has annihilated the Sul rendering it should be discussed in this article, rather than ignored. I remember this was discussed on this page in 2020 without any conclusion. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Birnt Hardnut (talkcontribs) 16:38, 1 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
